County and DPP coaches from across Northumberland gathered on Sunday 28th June at Kingston Park to hear presentations from England Under 18 coach John Fletcher and Falcons Academy manager Mark Laycock, on the theme of ‘What is success?’. Arranged by Northumberland RU the delegates received fascinating insights into the coaching approach and progression path within the Falcons Academy, as well as how rugby skills are developed within England age group squads.
Mark Richard chair of Representative Rugby in Northumberland said “..we are very fortunate in Northumberland to have a close working relationship with both the RFU and Falcons' coaching teams and through our recently developed player pathway scheme can offer aspiring rugby players a comprehensive programme of coaching and well-being advice from the age of 13 right up to U20”. Drew Robertson Pathway Manager for Northumberland and organiser of the event was equally delighted with the outcome “..this is one of many unique events that we have organised for Area and County coaches and players in NRU this year, to give them the opportunity to access the very best and latest in coaching information and techniques. All of which we are sure will lead to better players and coaches in the region. We are extremely grateful to Mark and John for sharing their expertise with us. It was a brilliant day and we are very thankful to the Falcons and the RFU for their continued support of the programme.”
The next event will see the coaches back at the Falcons in early July to go behind the scenes of the Falcons Junior Academy and watch them undertake preseason training.
