On 27 November Gosforth stalwart John Tucker was presented with an ‘Unsung Heroes of Sport’ award by Sport Newcastle in a ceremony held at Newcastle Falcons.
Sport Newcastle, formerly Newcastle Sports Council, is a charity which exists to raise funding to support young sports people achieve their goals through grants, scholarships and Rising Stars awards. It recognises that few sports people would achieve their ambitions were it not for the unsung volunteers who work largely unseen behind the scenes in sports clubs. Sport Newcastle recognises this every two years with its Unsung Heroes awards.
John’s award reflects his long service both to Gosforth FC [now Newcastle Falcons] and the fledgling Gosforth RFC which was formed in 1996 following the separation of the professional and amateur games at Kingston Park. The award in particular recognises the enormous amount of work that John, currently the club President, has put in over the years to look after the pitches and match day arrangements at the club’s three homes at Bullocksteads, Druid Park and Broadway West.
