On Friday, 13th September John Stafford (Morpeth RFC) and his wife, Hilary, together with Will Blackshaw from Blackshaws Mitsubishi Morpeth, enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant day at Pennyhill Park, Surrey before heading to Twickenham in the evening for pitchside drinks and dinner in the Spirit of Rugby suite.
This fantastic experience was John's reward for winning the Northumberland RFU Mitsubishi Volunteer of the Year award in May 2019.
Here's John's account of the day:
The day started with a tour of Pennyhill Park training facilities of the senior England team by James Haskell, which was very entertaining and Hask was very good.
Hilary and I then met up with Will Blackshaw from Blackshaws Mitsubishi Morpeth. Will is not rugby fan (far prefers St James’s Park!) but even he was impressed with Pennyhill Park training facilities & Hask!
We then headed for a drinks reception pitch side at Twickenham & dinner in Spirit of Rugby room – hosted by Alex Payne.
We had an excellent dinner & awards, where 3 very worthy winners were picked from 43 finalists.
On Saturday, we then headed for home via Macclesfield RFC where Morpeth 1st XV were playing. Hilary also spent one and a half hours in Macclesfield General Hospital with 1st team player Matt Dawson who put his shoulder out!
John went on to say "we had an excellent few days where we met some new friends & were very well looked after – the Twickenham visit actually went better without having a game as everyone was far more relaxed & we could appreciate the surroundings better."
