The return of Colts 7’s County Cup.
After a gap of 6 years, Colts 7’s are back with the return of the County Cup held at Alnwick RFC last night. Around 90 players from 9 teams really showed what they can do in some very competitive matches. Many players adapting to 7’s for the first time.
All 3 pitches were in action on a busy night at the club.
Moving to the first team pitch under lights, the Semi Finals involving Alnwick 1 v Alnwick 2 and Novos v Tynedale were both competitive games that the crowd really enjoyed.
In what is probably a first, the County President, Craig Wrightson, refereed the final – a tight, end to end match between Alnwick 1 and Tynedale which saw a well organised and skillful Tynedale take the win 26 -21. Everyone just wanted more rugby after a very exciting final!
Thank you to all of you who were able to attend and all the players who volunteered to play for the Barbarians side. Thanks also to Andy McDonough, Alan Gardiner, The County President and Niall Revell from the Northumberland Rugby Union Referees Society for giving up their time to officiate the matches. And finally, a big thank you to everyone at Alnwick who were such good hosts.
We are sure that the Colts 7’s Cup will now return as a regular fixture in the calendar.
