Finally, the wait is over. Competitive rugby returned this weekend in the much anticipated Northumberland Senior Shield clash between Gosforth RFC and Wallsend RFC. 

Match Report

The match kicked off promptly at 2:00 PM, with both teams demonstrating their intent from the outset. It was Gosforth who made an instant impact, securing a converted try within just 2 minutes of play, setting the tone for their attacking prowess. The early score gave them a 7-0 lead.
 
Wallsend, however, quickly retaliated, showcasing their determination. In the 6th minute, Sean Baker powered through Gosforth’s defence to score a try for Wallsend, although the conversion was missed, narrowing the gap to 7-5.
 
Despite Wallsend’s resurgence, Gosforth continued to assert their dominance. By the 10th minute, Gosforth had extended their lead with another try, although the conversion was once again unsuccessful. The score now stood at 12-5 in favour of Gosforth.
 
Gosforth’s attacking flair remained relentless, resulting in a converted try in the 15th minute that further stretched their lead to 19-5. Wallsend struggled to contain Gosforth’s offensive prowess, allowing another converted try in the 22nd minute, with Gosforth firmly in control at 26-5.
 
The first half continued with Gosforth adding to their impressive tally. A try in the 25th minute extended their lead to 31-5, followed by another try in the 28th minute that went unconverted, making it 36-5.
 
As the clock ticked towards halftime, Gosforth continued to dominate the scoreboard. They managed to secure a converted try in the 32nd minute, taking their lead to a commanding 43-5. The first half concluded with Gosforth adding yet another try in the 39th minute, making it 48-5.

The second half commenced with Wallsend determined to mount a comeback. Despite their slow start in the first half, they came out with renewed energy and resilience.
 
Within the opening minutes of the second half, Wallsend showcased their fighting spirit. In the 62nd minute, Harry Smith managed to break through Gosforth’s defense to score a try, narrowing the scoreline to 48-10.
However, Gosforth’s attacking prowess was not to be denied. They continued to press forward, and in the 68th minute, they secured another try, extending their lead to 53-10.
 
Gosforth’s momentum persisted, and they added to their lead once again in the 71st minute with another try, making it 58-10.
 
Wallsend managed to salvage a moment of pride in the 73rd minute, as Timmy Woods powered over the try line. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 58-15.
