On Tuesday 23rd September Tynedale Colts welcomed a current Newcastle Falcon and an ex Falcons player both of whom have also played for Scotland’s national side. Jon Welsh and Murray McCallum very kindly agreed to give up their own time and take a scrummaging training session with Tynedale’s new young Colts.
What followed was nearly two hours of intense training! A thorough warm up started the session which exposed the team to stretches they didn’t even think were possible 😳 . Following the warm up the two Internationals started at the bottom with a hooker and worked up slowly until a full pack locked down against Tynedale’s wooden scrum machine. Each stage was broken down and explained in great depth before moving on to the next.
Tynedale have a record breaking 53 man Colts squad this season with 27 of them being forwards. Their enthusiasm to train, learn and develop has been extraordinary for a young group. Tuesdays session was another box ticked in their develop programme.
Tynedale Colts Head Coach, Steve Turnbull said after the session ‘the forwards that took part in the session thoroughly enjoyed every minute, they were all amazed at the depth of the technical side of a top class scrum and all can’t wait to put it into practice against their next opponents’.
The session finished with team circle where Jon and Murray went over all the points they had taught. They did ask the players if they had any questions, the only question that was asked was, ‘when are you coming back!”.
